Distribution system operators in a decarbonised power system

The transition to clean energy is creating seismic shifts in how we generate, deliver and consume electricity. Distribution system operators face significant challenges and opportunities stemming from increases in renewables, distributed generation, active consumers and electrification of heating and transport. To successfully navigate this shift, distribution system operators will need to embrace changes in their role and structure, and explore digitalisation and innovation. Philip Baker identifies the greatest catalysts for change as well as potential solutions.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Pay-for-performance pilots for energy efficiency

Pay-for-performance schemes reward end users or aggregators for energy savings measured against a business-as-usual baseline. They can help provide investors and decision-makers with greater certainty that efficiency measures will actually improve building performance. As part of the Horizon 2020 project SENSEI, RAP led a new study that examines pay-for-performance programmes, including 11 case studies, and provides policy and regulatory recommendations for successful replication of this approach across the EU.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

How we reduced our energy bills by 60%

What a difference a year makes. In June 2019, Dr. Jan Rosenow reported that he had replaced his perfectly reliable gas boiler with a heat pump and promised to share the results of his experiment. The numbers speak for themselves: 54% lower energy use, carbon emissions savings between 46% and 58%, a 60% reduction in energy costs — and even more impressive measures per square metre. Learn about the science behind the savings.

International experiences with Efficiency First

Efficiency First is an established principle of EU energy policy and can provide enormous benefits in the energy transition. RAP, leading a consortium for the Horizon 2020 project ENEFIRST, analysed with partners 16 practical examples of initiatives from the United States and EU Member States. The authors delve into how Efficiency First was implemented and what lessons other regions can learn from these experiences.

Electricity market design for high shares of renewable generation

As technology mixes change, so will market outcomes. But this does not change the fundamental economic principles behind market design. RAP’s Michael Hogan and his co-authors explore key design issues needing attention in electricity markets dominated by intermittent renewable generation with near-zero private marginal costs for generating electricity.
